Background: The result was a pretty boring but thoroughly academically stimulating upbringing, one that lent itself well to life in Starfleet. While his parents never served in Starfleet, they did work closely with some of their Scientists and wholeheartedly supported the Federation and Starfleet's mission of peaceful exploration, though they recognized that peaceful solutions were not always possible. Not every species had such Utopian beliefs. Hugh showed early interest in joining Starfleet and both his parents encouraged him to seek out his goal, offering their own time and effort in making sure he had all the necessary studies completed so that he could pass the entrance exam without trouble. All of their hard work paid off and he gained admittance to the Academy on his first attempt. Starfleet Academy was everything that Hugh had dreamed it would be. It was a veritable cornucopia of information and experiences that he would have never been able to amass elsewhere in the Galaxy. It truly was the center of his universe and from day one he immersed himself in it. His initial aspirations were to be a biologist, assigned to some type of Science vessel intent on cruising the stars investigating all sorts of new phenomena and pushing the boundaries of known Science. His first year was spent solely on that goal, but as he progressed to the end of his first year, he began to find that Medicine was even more stimulating and chose to do a dual major in Biology and Pre-Medical. The course load was a bit more than he had expected, but Hugh managed to adjust. His grades fell slightly as was expected with so many courses, but he still managed to stay in the top 25% of the class. In the end he graduated and moved right along from the Academy into Starfleet Medical, finishing out the last four years before joining the Fleet as a Lieutenant JG Medical Officer aboard the USS Hartley. It was aboard this ship that he met his wife, Jamie. While their relationship didn't exactly start with heavenly music or golden rays of sunshine, after working together for some time they realized that they had feelings for each other and began a relationship that took three years to mature into marriage. Hugh married Jamie a few days after he made Lieutenant and together they transferred from the Hartley to the newly commissioned USS Potemkin where Hugh would be the Assistant Chief Medical Officer and Jamie the Assistant Science Officer. It was a great set-up, but one that wouldn't last too long. After a few years Hugh, though he enjoyed the Sick Bay, was becoming a bit tired of the tedium of physicals and basic medicine and decided it was time to expand his horizons a bit. With the approval of the ship's CO, he began taking Command courses on the holodeck to get rated for Flight Control and Command postings. Jamie wasn't initial excited about his sudden change in focus, but she supported her husband nonetheless. It was during this time that their marriage changed from a duo, to a trio. His son, Walter, was born aboard the Potemkin and marked a complete change in their lifestyle, as any child would. Both of them were excited at the blessing and poured all that they had into the child. It breathed new life into Hugh, who in turn hit his studies even harder. He had a new goal now, he wanted to be Captain and take his family with him everywhere he went. He got his wish sooner than he thought. In 2372, just following the birth of their daughter Lynn, Hugh was given Command of the Galaxy-Class Starship, USS Midway. It was his dream and he proudly accepted the Command, taking his wife and children along with him. His wife, to prevent any favoritism being felt, resigned her Starfleet commission to spend her time with her children and in support of her husband who would know bear the worries of an entire ship. He would need her support in the years that followed if he was going to be successful. Neither of them had any idea what dangers lay on the horizon. The Dominion. Hostilities had escalated with the Dominion, turning into full scale war. The Midway was quickly called into action and Captain Bishop led them into battle on multiple occasions, from Chin'toka to many minor engagements in Cardassian territory, but it was the later conflicts that would claim so much more. During the Second Battle of Chin'toka, though the Midway fought valiantly, the entirety of the Federation Fleet was destroyed. So many of his crew had been killed and seeing death or escape as his only options, he ordered the evacuation of the ship and engaged the auto-destruct with enough time to retrive his family and escape with his crew. With his XO, they made for his quarters to get his wife and children to find the most horrible of truths; they were already dead. Commander Lauriet had to physically drag Captain Bishop to the escape pods, Hugh had simply shut down, the image of his wife and children dead burned into his mind. If Lauriet hadn't bodily taken him from his quarters Bishop would have died in the auto-destruct. Lauriet and Bishop managed to escape, but while they both left the ship physically the same Captain Bishop that had led them into battle was never seen again. Bishop returned to Federations space and Fleet Command as a hero on Chin'toka, but he wanted nothing to do with it. He quickly descended into solitude, refusing transfer orders and even getting into a brawl with a Commodore trying to impress Bishop into a Fleet Command position. Seeing his fragile mental state, Starfleet sent him to one of their psychiatric facilities, but not before his actions or rather inaction garnered him a demotion to Commander. Bishop spent the next few years trying to reconcile his former life to his current one, all the while under the supervision of some of Starfleet's finest Doctor's. In the end, the man who Captained the USS Midway was long since dead. Questions was, who was he now? Declared medically fit for duty and having requested to return to the Fleet, Hugh's was reactivated and assigned to a Nova Class vessel as her Executive Officer, Command felt that while he was a valuable asset he still needed to prove himself capable of holding another Command.
